Cleaning method
Pet hair checkout checklist for hosts and guests (two-sided)
Vague “leave it clean” instructions create disputes about what “pet hair free” meant. A shared two-sided list sets expectations for visible hair without turning this page into a contract. For the cleaner’s timed hair block, use the 15-minute pet-friendly turnover. For the full seven-detail cleanliness order, see Airbnb turnover cleaning.
Two-sided checklists beat vague “leave it clean”
Guests want their belongings and deposit process to go smoothly. Hosts want the next arrival to see white bedding and sofa seats without yesterday’s coat. Writing both sides down reduces “I thought vacuuming the whole house was implied” arguments. Keep the list about visible hair, waste, and soft surfaces — not a lecture on liability.
Guest checklist (day of checkout)
Guest — morning of checkout
- Walk the yard, balcony, or designated waste area per the listing’s house rules and bag waste properly.
- Empty food and water bowls; wipe stands so residue does not sit for the next guest.
- Pile pet blankets, beds, and crate pads next to the laundry area or where the host asked.
- Roll sofa seats and any bedspread or throw pets used — dry surface only; bag the hair.
- Quick look at the entry rug; message the host immediately if there was an accident so enzymatic treatment can be scheduled.
Guests do not need to deep-clean ovens or rewash all linen unless the listing asks. Focus on waste, pet bedding piled for laundry, and the furniture surfaces pets touched. If the house rules ask for a vacuum pass, follow that listing — otherwise soft-surface reset is the realistic ask.
Host / cleaner verification checklist
Host — after the cleaner’s pass
- White-surface photo-level check of duvet faces, pillow fronts, and sofa seats (no guest faces in any frame).
- Roll any missed bedding or sofa hair with the Hand Rollers Set still in the caddy.
- Flip and roll sofa cushion decks on a schedule (for example every fourth turnover), not only when a guest complains.
- Confirm enzymatic treatment is logged if an accident was reported — fragrance is not a substitute.
- Rinse and reset the roller in the cleaning caddy so the next cleaner does not start with a loaded tool.
Deposit and documentation (non-legal)
If your house rules already describe how you document condition, follow those rules and the platform’s Resolution Center process yourself. We do not coach claim language, fee math, or discrimination questions here. Platform overview pieces such as Airbnb’s hosting pets resource and listing cleanliness standards are starting points for reading current policy — not substitutes for legal counsel. Photograph only in ways your own rules and privacy expectations already allow.
Tools that make the checklist realistic
Leave a Forever Sticky Hand Rollers Set on site or in the cleaner’s kit so both sides can clear visible hair without hunting for sticky paper. Mention a Pet Mitt in the guidebook for sofa corners and fabric arms if you want guests to help on curved panels — secondary tool, still one primary product for this post. Washable throws convert an upholstery job into laundry when pets are allowed on furniture; wash them every turnover in that setup. Stanley Steemer’s upholstery pet-hair tips support covers, surface vacuuming, and not letting hair sink deeper between deeper cleans.
Allergy-sensitive guests may still react even when hair looks gone. Cleaning reduces visible fur and some carriers; it does not create a medical guarantee. For household framing without clinical promises, see pet allergies — and treat symptoms with a clinician, not a blog checklist.

Frequently asked questions
- Can a host charge for pet hair?
- Only per the listing’s posted rules and the platform’s process. We do not interpret those rules, fee structures, or claim outcomes here — read your listing and current Airbnb help articles yourself.
- Should guests vacuum?
- Only if the listing asks. Otherwise focus on waste, piled pet bedding, and furniture surfaces pets used. Soft-surface reset is the realistic shared expectation.
- Is a roller enough after a pet stay?
- For visible hair on bedding and sofa faces, a dry roller pass is a solid finish. Accidents need enzymatic products and time to dry — schedule those between bookings when needed.
- How often should hosts wash throws?
- Every turnover if pets are allowed on furniture and you use washable throws as the barrier. That converts an upholstery job into laundry.
- Do hypoallergenic breeds leave no hair?
- No breed is allergen-free or hair-free. Clean the same way: waste, soft surfaces, and honest accident reporting — without medical promises.
