Cleaning method
7 details to check before guests arrive.
A five-star cleanliness rating is not awarded for a deep clean. It is awarded for the absence of specific, visible details in the places a guest looks first.
This is our suggested inspection order, not a ranking derived from complaint statistics. Cleaning time varies with the property and the mess.
Forever Sticky
Hair on white bedding
Hair on fresh bedding can make a guest question whether the linen was changed.
- Best for
- Duvets, pillowcases, sheets, upholstered headboards.
- Cost
- Uses the roller already in the cleaning kit.

Laundered linen still arrives with hair on it. It transfers in the dryer, off the folding surface, off the cleaner's own clothing, and off the bed frame during the make. Washing does not solve this; a final pass does.
After fitting clean linen, check the duvet, pillow faces and upholstered headboard for stray hair and collect it with the roller.
A silicone roller matters here for a practical reason: a cleaner working six properties cannot run out of sheets mid-turnover, and there is no consumable to restock across a portfolio.
Where it losesIt is a finishing step, not a substitute for laundering. It cannot help a duvet that needs washing, and it will not lift a stain.
Dust on dark and glossy surfaces
Invisible to the person cleaning under working light, obvious to a guest arriving in the evening with a lamp on.
- Best for
- Black appliances, dark wood, TV screens and frames, glossy cabinet fronts.
- Cost
- Free — a change of technique.
Dust shows on dark surfaces at low, raking light and vanishes under the overhead lighting most cleaning is done in. Check every dark surface with a phone flashlight held almost flat against it, and you will see what the guest will see.
Microfiber dry, then a second pass. A single wipe with a damp cloth leaves a film that shows worse than the dust did.
Include picture-frame tops, the TV frame and the headboard in the dust check.
Where it losesNothing on this list catches dust that has already resettled after the clean. In a property that sits empty between bookings, this has to be the last task before you leave.
Marks on glass and mirrors
Reads as carelessness rather than dirt, which is why it damages a rating out of proportion to the actual mess.
- Best for
- Bathroom mirrors, shower screens, glass tables, windows at eye height.
- Cost
- Free.
Work in one direction with a dry microfiber after the glass cleaner, not in circles. Circles leave a swirl that catches light exactly where a guest stands.
Check the mirror from the side, not straight on. Streaks are invisible head-on and obvious at an angle, which is how a guest sees a bathroom mirror when they walk in.
Shower screens need a squeegee at the end of every turnover, not glass cleaner. The marks are mineral, and cleaner alone smears them.
Where it losesHard water scale is a maintenance job, not a turnover job. If the screen has gone cloudy, no amount of turnover cleaning fixes it.
Hair and grit in the bathroom floor corners
Check bathroom corners for visible hair and grit that an open-floor sweep can miss.
- Best for
- Behind the toilet base, along the bath panel, the shower threshold, under the vanity.
- Cost
- Uses a suitable tool you already own, or buy one at the current supplier price.
Hair on a bathroom floor migrates to the perimeter and stays there, because a mop pushes it into the corner rather than picking it up. Sweep before you mop, every time.
Soft rubber bristles work here where a stiff broom does not, for the same reason they work on pet hair: stiff, widely spaced bristles push a wave of air ahead and scatter fine hair, while dense rubber ones flex against the floor and hold it by static.
They also work on a wet floor, which matters in a bathroom and rules out a vacuum entirely.
Where it losesIt gathers rather than captures, so you still need a dustpan, and a narrow gap behind a toilet may need a cloth by hand regardless of the tool.
Lingering smell from the previous guest
Not visible at all, and still one of the fastest ways to lose a cleanliness star, because it is the first thing a guest registers on opening the door.
- Best for
- Properties that allow pets, smoking-adjacent buildings, closed-up units.
- Cost
- Price varies by product for an enzymatic cleaner, plus ventilation time.
Ventilate when practical while cleaning, and find and clean the source of any odor rather than relying on fragrance.
For a specific source — a pet accident, a spill in a rug — use an enzymatic cleaner and apply it heavily enough to reach the depth the liquid soaked to. Masking sprays fail because the source is still there.
Avoid strong scented products. A property that smells aggressively of air freshener reads to guests as something being covered up.
Where it losesEnzymatic treatment takes hours to dry properly, which does not fit a same-day turnover. Schedule it between bookings, not during a changeover.
Fingerprints on light switches, handles and remotes
High-touch surfaces deserve an explicit place on the checklist.
- Best for
- Switch plates, door handles, fridge handles, TV remotes, kettle handles.
- Cost
- Free.
List light switches, handles and remotes as a checklist item so they are not overlooked. Follow cleaning-product contact times and device care instructions.
Clean remote buttons as well as the casing, following the device instructions.
Use a barely damp cloth on switch plates rather than spraying — spray runs behind the plate and into the wall.
Where it losesPurely cosmetic. It has no effect on actual hygiene beyond the surface itself.
Fabric furniture that never gets cleaned between guests
The surface guests sit on longest and turnovers touch least, which is why it accumulates across dozens of stays.
- Best for
- Sofas, dining chair seats, upholstered stools, cushion covers.
- Cost
- Uses the roller already in the cleaning kit.
Upholstery does not get changed between guests the way linen does, so it collects hair, crumbs and lint over months. A roller pass per turnover keeps it from ever reaching a state that a guest photographs.
Lift each cushion and roll the deck underneath every fourth or fifth turnover. That is where crumbs and hair accumulate invisibly, and it is what a guest finds when they lose a phone down the side.
Add throws you can launder if the property allows pets. It converts an upholstery job into a laundry job.
Where it losesSurface work only. A sofa that has absorbed odor or been stained needs professional upholstery cleaning, which is a scheduled maintenance cost, not a turnover task.
The turnover kit this implies
| Item | Covers | Running cost |
|---|---|---|
| Silicone roller | Bedding, upholstery, chair seats | $0 |
| Rubber-bristle broom | Bathroom and hard floors, wet or dry | $0 |
| Microfiber cloths | Dust, glass, high-touch points | Laundry |
| Squeegee | Shower screens | $0 |
| Enzymatic cleaner | Odor sources between bookings | Per bottle |
The reason a silicone roller belongs in a multi-property kit rather than a pack of sticky sheets is not performance on a single bed. It is that a cleaner running six turnovers in a day cannot run out, and there is no consumable to track across a portfolio.
How we ranked these
The ordering reflects our suggested visual inspection routine. We have no complaint-frequency dataset or timed comparison supporting a measured ranking.
Schedule deeper cleaning as well. Grout, oven interiors and mattress protectors still need attention when soiled; this final check is not the complete turnover clean.
Frequently asked questions
- What do Airbnb guests notice first about cleanliness?
- Hair on bedding, dust on dark surfaces and marks on glass are useful places to start a final visual check. This is a checklist, not a measured account of guest behavior.
- How do you get hair off bedding during a turnover?
- After making the bed with clean linen, check and roll the duvet top, pillow faces and upholstered headboard to collect stray hair. This does not replace laundering.
- What order should a turnover clean follow?
- Dust surfaces first, then sweep, then mop, and roll the bedding last. Cleaning in the reverse order means dust lands on the floor you finished and floor work puts hair back on the bed.
- How do you remove guest odor from a rental?
- Open windows at the start of the clean rather than the end, and treat any specific source with an enzymatic cleaner applied heavily enough to reach the depth it soaked to. Scented sprays mask rather than remove, and read to guests as covering something up.
